For many producers, the work of making confident spring bull sale decisions begins well before sale day, with winter providing an important opportunity to review breeding objectives, assess herd direction and identify the information that matters most.
As the spring bull selling season approaches, many producers will be evaluating potential sires and making decisions that will influence the future performance of their herds for years to come.
These decisions are rarely made in isolation, with seasonal conditions, feed availability, market signals and business priorities all influencing where producers focus their attention and which genetics they choose to invest in.
At the same time, producers have access to more genetic information than ever before. Sale catalogues are filled with Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs), selection indexes, percentile bands and genomic information, all designed to provide greater insight into an animal’s genetic potential.
While this information is a valuable resource, it can sometimes feel like there is more data available than time to interpret it. However, genetic information is not intended to complicate sire selection; it is there to support clear, more informed decisions.
Although conditions and markets change, sire selection remains one of the most important long-term decisions in any breeding program. The genetics selected this spring will influence herd productivity, profitability and resilience for years to come. The key is knowing what information matters most for your operation and using it to support your breeding objectives.
START WITH YOUR BREEDING OBJECTIVE
Before comparing bulls or interpreting figures, it is worth stepping back to consider what success looks like within your production system.
Different enterprises place value on different traits. For example, two Angus self-replacing herds may prioritise fertility, calving ease and maternal performance, recognising the importance of maintaining a productive and efficient cow herd. However, if one enterprise is targeting a feeder steer market and the other is predominantly selling weaners, their selection focus may differ.
While both systems rely on a strong maternal foundation, the feeder steer producer may place greater emphasis on genetics that drive performance beyond weaning and capture the value further along the supply chain. The weaner producer may place relatively more emphasis on genetics that support performance to weaning and early growth, while maintaining cow herd efficiency.
This is why a clear breeding objective is essential; it provides the context needed to determine which information is more relevant within each production system.
INTERPRETING THE NUMBERS
EBVs provide a deeper understanding of genetic differences between animals. EBVs estimate genetic merit for individual traits and allow direct comparison between animals within the same evaluation.
The value of EBVs is not in the number itself, but in how they help inform selection decisions. EBVs are a comparative tool, used to assess how the progeny of sires may differ.
Percentile bands can further assist producers in quickly comparing animals by indicating where an animal sits relative to the wider Angus population.
With this information, attention can shift away from attempting to assess every available trait and instead focus on the traits that most strongly align with your breeding objective and influence herd performance and profitability in your system.
While some traits may be of particular importance, selection decisions should not be based on a single trait in isolation. Many traits are genetically correlated, meaning selection for improvement in one trait can have favourable or unfavourable impacts on other traits.
NARROWING THE FIELD
Once a breeding objective is defined, selection indexes provide a useful starting point when identifying animals that align with your production system. By combining information across traits into a single value, they help narrow the field to animals expected to deliver genetic improvement and increased profitability within a defined production scenario.
Indexes are not designed to replace other information, but to help prioritise animals for further evaluation. They provide a practical first step in moving from a long list of potential sires to a more manageable group of candidates.
